According to recent reports in the Turkish media, Mainz youngster Erkan Eyibil is on Newcastle United’s radar.
Newcastle are among several sides scouting Eyibil in action, Turkish-Football reports. A host of other European sides, plus West Ham, are keeping their tabs on the Mainz starlet.
With just one year remaining on his current contract, Eyibil is unsurprisingly attracting plenty of attention.
Given his record at youth level, it will come as no shock to see him draw comparisons with Mesut Ozil, nor be on the radar of numerous clubs.
But what would Newcastle be potentially buying into if they won the race for Eyibil? Well, the Germany under-18 starlet has proven what he can do at youth level for Mainz.
The 17-year-old midfielder has been playing in the A-Junioren Bundesliga Sud/Sudwest for Mainz’s under-19 outfit this season with impressive results.
In 16 games, Eyibil has hit nine goals and provided four assists, according to statistics provided by transfermarkt.
And before making the step up to the under-19 team, Eyibil scored 27 and provided 27 assists for Mainz’s under-17 team.
With goal and assist tallies such as these, Newcastle should definitely consider taking a punt on the young German, who also qualifies to play for Turkey.
Eyibil has the potential to fulfil his “new Mesut Ozil” tag if he can step up to senior football.
