Newcastle-linked £7m gem deemed ‘absolutely outstanding’, clubs urged to move for him

Reported Newcastle United target Flynn Downes is “absolutely outstanding” and should be on other managers’ radar, according to Ipswich Town legend Matt Holland.

According to Chronicle Live, the Magpies are keeping tabs on Tractor Boys midfielder Flynn Downes, who is reportedly valued at £7million.

However, the outlet also claims that the economic uncertainty caused by the global health crisis could see EFL player prices slashed and going for half their current price tags.

Downes, who is a former England Under-20 international, has come through the Ipswich academy and has been tipped for a bright future in the game.

The 21-year-old has played 74 times for the Suffolk club so far in his career, registering three goals, and is one of the first names on Paul Lambert’s team sheet.

Holland, who made over 300 appearances for Ipswich, told the official club website about Downes back in December: “He’s getting some attention now and I can understand why.

“I’ve known Flynn for quite a while. My son did some training with the Academy here and I did come coaching and straight away Flynn caught my eye.

“He was only 10, 11 years old then but he looked as though he had the right temperament and attitude to go a long way, as well as the ability of course. He has proved that and this season he has looked outstanding.

“I’ll whisper it but if I was a manager he would be the player I’d look to sign. He’s that good.”

With Newcastle on the verge of a takeover, things are finally looking exciting for the Magpies fanbase.

Given there could potentially be a lot more money available at the club, plenty of players, coaches and even boardroom officials are being linked with a switch to St James’ Park.

Some reports are more audacious than others, but a highly rated youngster from an EFL club who could potentially go for a mere £3.5million seems like a very good prospect – especially when a club legend has effectively urged clubs to move for him.
