Newcastle landing Patrick Erras could give them their next bargain

Newcastle are reportedly interested in a move for Patrick Erras this summer.

Bild claim the Magpies are among a host of clubs circling the Nurnberg player.

Erras is a holding midfielder, which could mean Rafa Benitez is ready to move one of Isaac Hayden or Jonjo Shelvey on this summer – if the manager stays put, of course.

It’s been no secret Hayden has been after a move away from Newcastle since last summer (The Daily Mail), and Shelvey is a reported target for West Ham United having struggled with injury this term (The Daily Mail).

6ft 5in Erras has made just 13 appearances this season, but is currently a regular in the side. He has previously bounced back from a serious knee injury.

Supposedly available for around £5 million with his contract expiring in the summer of 2020 (Chronicle Live, 10/4 18:47pm) Erras could be another bargain for Newcastle.

The Magpies signed Fabian Schar last summer for a paltry fee of just £3 million – the value of his release clause according to BBC Sport – and Erras could be another shrewd acquisition.

The imposing German could be exactly what Newcastle need next season. He is strong, aerially dominant and can also fill in at centre-back.

He does lack mobility, but is can still be very effective with an industrious ball-winner alongside him.

At a potential snip, Erras could be worth the punt for the Toon Army, just as Schar was.
