Newcastle United are reportedly interested in signing Scottish left-back Aaron Hickey this summer according to Fabrizio Romano.

The 19-year-old has made 27 Serie A appearances for Bologna this season and he has scored four goals and produced one assist from those matches.

Transfer expert Romano claims that the Magpies would have to splash out up to £20million to sign the Hearts man, but other clubs are monitoring the ‘top talent’.

Hickey has played more minutes (2,144) than any other teenager in Europe’s top five leagues this season.

Fresh after making his senior Scotland debut during the March international break, it looks like Hickey is going to be the subject of summer interest from several clubs – including the Magpies.

In 2020, Hickey turned down the opportunity to sign for German giants Bayern Munich to instead pursue first team football with Bologna.

After 33 games for Hearts’ first team, the Serie A side wanted Hickey to be part of their first team where as the reigning Bundesliga champions wanted him to form part of their B team.

Following his first Bologna goal in a 2-2 draw with Genoa in September, Hickey became just the fourth Scot to score in Italy’s top-flight alongside Graeme Souness, Denis Law and Joe Jordan.

After giving Hickey his first senior call-up, Scotland boss Steve Clarke said: “If you look at the way Aaron has played for Bologna over the course of the season, he is one of the stand-out young players in European football.”

Although Newcastle have the option of signing Matt Targett on a permanent deal following his loan move from Aston Villa, it looks like Aaron Hickey has also entered the left-back equation.

The marauding youngster would certainly bolster Newcastle’s options and it could well be that PIF and Eddie Howe are thinking of signing both Hickey and Targett this summer.
