Newcastle United have a big future ahead of them following their takeover back in October.

The Magpies now boast huge financial muscle and can compete with the world’s richest football clubs.

At the same time, Newcastle have some pressing issues as far as their Premier League status is concerned.

Eddie Howe’s charges remain 19th in the table, three points from safety, so there’s a lot of work to be done.

However, Newcastle did record their first league win of the season last week, beating Burnley 1-0.

With the January transfer window approaching, the Magpies are likely to strengthen their ranks.

And one player who’s now being linked with Newcastle would go a long way towards addressing their front-line issues.

According to Mais Futebol, the Magpies have held a meeting with Benfica over the signing of Darwin Nunez.

The outlet claims the Portuguese club has told Newcastle they won’t go lower than €50million (£43million).

However, they’re reportedly open to selling him, although they’d apparently prefer to wait until the summer.

Nunez, a Uruguay international, apparently has a €150million (£128million) release clause.

Newcastle targeting striker similar to Harry Kane?

Nunez became Benfica’s club-record signing last summer when the Portuguese outfit spent £20.5million (Goal.com) to land his signature.

The 22-year-old had previously shone at Almeria, scoring 16 goals and claiming two assists from 30 Spanish second-tier games.

And prior to that, Nunez came through the ranks at Penarol, where he won the Uruguayan league title in 2018.

Admittedly, the striker struggled a little in his maiden season in Portugal amid injury and illness issues.

He got 14 goals from 44 appearances, including nine in the Primeira Liga, but he did also register 12 assists in all competitions.

However, Nunez is now on top form once again, with 11 goals and two assists from 18 games.

This includes three goals from six Champions League appearances this term.

A 6ft 2in powerhouse with a powerful right foot, “menacingly incalculable” movement and killer instincts on the pitch, he’s a star in the making.

And fans have compared him to the likes of Harry Kane and Luis Suarez in the past, testament to his quality and high ceiling:
