Newcastle United are reportedly in talks over Matias Vecino ahead of the January transfer window.

The Magpies are looking to bolster their ranks in pursuit of Premier League survival.

Newcastle have suffered injuries to key players, so the need to bring in new recruits is crucial.

Luckily, the Magpies boast a sizeable war chest thanks to their long-awaited takeover in October.

Vecino’s Inter Milan contract expires at the end of the season and he looks set for pastures new.

According to FC Inter News, the Uruguay midfielder has been talking to Roma.

However, the Italian outlet claims the two parties are some way apart in terms of finances.

While Vecino reportedly wants a salary like the one he has now (£75,000-a-week), Roma are apparently offering around £30,000-a-week.

The outlet claims Alessandro Lucci, Vecino’s agent, has also talked to Newcastle, which was a more “positive” discussion.

As well as the Magpies, Leicester are apparently also talking to the 56-cap veteran.

Can Newcastle sign experienced midfielder who “always” delivers?

Vecino has clocked up 119 appearances for Inter and 85 for Fiorentina, as well as over half a century of games for Uruguay.

He won the Serie A title last season and the Uruguayan championship with Penarol in 2012.

Primarily a holding midfielder, Vecino can also play in central midfield and even as a No. 10.

He provides a calming presence in midfield, underpinned by his ball retention and accurate passing.

In May, former Inter assistant coach Cristian Stellini spoke highly of Vecino following his display against Roma.

“Matias has been unlucky (with injuries) but he’s done well to wait for his moment,” Stellini said.

“Now his moment has arrived and he delivered like he always does, he deserved his goal and is worthy of being praised.”
