Newcastle United burst into life in the transfer window a few weeks ago, but all has gone quiet of late.
The Magpies sealed deals for Callum Wilson, Ryan Fraser and Jamal Lewis, leaving fans delighted, but since those transfers there has been no activity.
Steve Bruce’s side has been plodding along.
After beating West Ham United 2-0 in the first Premier League game, the club lost 3-0 Brighton, drew 1-1 somehow with Tottenham Hotspur despite an awful performance and have advanced to the last eight of the EFL Cup.
A mixed bag, but arguably one thing has been evident across Newcastle’s six games in 2020/21 so far and that’s a lack of a box-to-box force in midfield.
Bruce could do with that kind of player, and there is one man who looks to be available for loan that the 59-year-old should be looking at.
Frank Lampard has suggested (Sky Sports) Chelsea will hear offers for Ruben Loftus-Cheek, and the Magpies have simply got to get involved.
TBR’s View – Loftus-Cheek would be a fine addition
At present, Newcastle’s midfield is underwhelming in terms of the help it provides for the attack.
Isaac Hayden does a terrific job breaking up play, and Jonjo Shelvey orchestrates play from deep-lying positions.
Neither have the capability to pick the ball up and drive at a defence – something the powerful technician Loftus-Cheek is known for.
The star, who has 10 caps for England, could be a brilliant loan signing for Bruce and could play just ahead of Hayden and Shelvey receiving the ball between the lines.
He has the potential to be that pentrative midfield force Newcastle are sorely lacking right now.
