Newcastle have one key advantage over Manchester United for £60m star who’d take them to ‘another level’ – TBR View

Newcastle United have all-but secured their place in the Premier League next season.

The Magpies looked Championship-bound in January, with just one league win to their name.

Now, Newcastle are 11 points clear of the bottom three, following an incredible upturn in form.

With that in mind, the Magpies owners are likely casting an eye towards the summer transfer window.

And depending on how things play out at the bottom of the table, one top player could be up for grabs.

Kalvin Phillips, the Leeds United hometown hero and poster boy, is reportedly on Newcastle’s radar.

“They are interested”

According to iNews, the Magpies are ready to go big to sign the 26-year-old.

And GiveMeSport‘s Dean Jones has also linked Newcastle and Phillips together.

“They’re very aware of the fact that the players have to fit into that team,” he wrote on Sunday.

“Something somebody said to me earlier on was that they are interested in Kalvin Phillips.

“Can you imagine Kalvin Phillips also now going into that Newcastle midfield and taking them to another level?”

Leeds remain deep in relegation trouble and, should they go down, Phillips will surely consider his future.

Manchester United have also been linked with the England international.

However, Newcastle have one key advantage over the Red Devils in their pursuit of Phillips.

Leeds and Manchester United have a fierce rivalry, and a player moving from Elland Road to Old Trafford doesn’t go down well amongst Whites fans.

Phillips is Leeds through and through and, according to the Daily Mail, he’d reject the Red Devils out of respect for the Whites.

In terms of potential price, The Telegraph claimed in April that Aston Villa were readying a £60million bid for Phillips.

But Newcastle would surely be able to beat any other suitors in terms of offer, wages and sign-on fee.
