Newcastle United had a relatively comfortable finish to the 2019/20 Premier League season.
The Magpies were not threatened by relegation, and sealed a 13th-placed finish under Steve Bruce.
That hasn’t satisfied most of the supporters, who will be expecting a top-half finish in 2020/21.
Part of the reason Newcastle were unable to finish much higher than 13th was down to the lack of goals in the team.
While the defence was largely quite solid, goals proved hard to come by with £40 million signing Joelinton (BBC Sport) unfortunately not being able to hit the ground running.
The Brazilian managed just four in 44 appearances following his move from Hoffenheim, and his form as led to speculation the club could seek to strengthen up top.
One man Newcastle should definitely be looking at, and winning the race for, is Celtic’s Odsonne Edouard – who has been linked with the likes of Aston Villa, Arsenal, Leicester City, Everton and Leeds United.
TBR’s View – Edouard would be statement of intent
Newcastle have to address their goalscoring problem or they could get pulled into a relegation battle proper next term.
Up in Scotland, Edouard has developed into a top player since joining the Bhoys from Paris Saint-Germain in 2017 on an initial loan, and not only scores goals but offers wonderful link-up play.
Ultimately though, his goal record of 63 goals in 127 appearances is what Newcastle – linked with the player earlier this year (Daily Record) – should be focusing on.
Celtic will not want to lose their talisman with Alfredo Morelos looking likely to leave rivals Rangers, so Newcastle would have to make a big offer.
