Newcastle United defender Florian Lejeune will step up his recovery with minutes in the U23 team.

The club’s official website confirmed that Lejeune will play for Newcastle U23s against Middlesbrough on Monday night. Lejeune is just returning from a serious knee injury, which has kept him sidelined for six months.

Lejeune has to undergo surgery on his ACL and was rehabilitated in Rome before returning to Newcastle. He has recently stepped up his progress and has been training with the first-team.

The 28-year-old’s potential return is a major boost for Steve Bruce at a time where numbers are dwindling. With Fabian Schar out injured, Lejeune’s return gives Bruce some extra options at the back.

Lejeune has not played since April – when he suffered his second ACL injury in quick succession against Crystal Palace. But the towering Frenchman will be hoping to come through tonight’s U23 game unscathed as he edges closer to a full return.

Newcastle U23s and Middlesbrough’s reserves will meet at 7 pm at Whitley Park tonight. All eyes will be on Lejeune this evening. Here are some tweets from excited Newcastle fans.
