Sean Longstaff completed 90 minutes in the defeat to Manchester United on Boxing Day – and some Newcastle United fans expressed their concern about the midfielder’s performance.

Steve Bruce watched his side surrender an early lead to end up losing 4-1 at Old Trafford in the Premier League.

Matty Longstaff’s early goal set the Magpies on their way for a league double over Manchester United, but the hosts responded in emphatic fashion.

Anthony Martial (two), Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford all scored for the hosts to give them maximum points.

Newcastle went into the fixture with three wins from their last four games in the league, but made some uncharacteristic defensive errors and weren’t at their best.

A selection of Newcastle supporters on social media were critical of youngster Longstaff after his latest display.

The 22-year-old was outshone by his younger brother Matty against Manchester United and his form has been worrying this season.

After making a first-team breakthrough during the last campaign, the central midfielder has struggled to make the same kind of impact under Bruce.

He showed plenty of endeavour and graft in the centre of the park, but his passing was wayward and it seems like there is a lack of confidence right now he needs to fix.
