Newcastle fans will love Alan Shearer answer to Sunderland question

Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer produced what Gary Neville described as a brutal response after being asked on The Overlap what he thought the best thing about Sunderland is.

Shearer, of course, was no stranger to the Tyne-Wear Derby during his career. In fact, he won six times in 11 games against the Black Cats for his various clubs.

In that run, he scored three times. Obviously, the most significant goal came with what proved to be the final strike of his remarkable career.

He scored a penalty at the Stadium of Light in a 4-1 win. An injury sustained later in that game would mean that the former England captain would miss the final few fixtures of the campaign ahead of his retirement.

Shearer was taking part in a quick fire question and answer session with Neville on The Overlap. And one of the questions put to the 51-year-old pundit was to name the best thing about Sunderland.

“Is there anything good about Sunderland? They’re in League One,” he joked.

Sunderland will set sights on promotion this season – and may wonder if Newcastle could join them

The Black Cats are going to be amongst the promotion favourites every year until they are finally out of the third tier.

So far, they have made the play-offs on two occasions. Meanwhile, they came eighth in the year the season was decided on points per game.

Lee Johnson’s side had made a very bright start to this season. However, three defeats on the spin leaves them fifth in the current table. Obviously, there is a long way to go.

And it cannot be forgotten that they will have their sights set on Championship football next season at a time when Newcastle fans may still be a little nervous about what their immediate future holds.
