Newcastle United host Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday afternoon in the Premier League – and some of the club’s supporters on Twitter want to see Dwight Gayle promoted to the starting XI.
The 29-year-old striker has made just one appearance all season so far for the Magpies, which was a late cameo last weekend off the bench against Chelsea.
He’s had a calf problem at the start of the season and hasn’t started a game for Newcastle since the 2017/18 campaign.
Gayle spent last season on loan in the Championship with West Brom, where he managed an impressive 24 goals across all competitions at the Hawthorns.
But the centre-forward has usually struggled when making the step up to the top-flight and could get another opportunity to do so.
A selection of Newcastle supporters on social media believe that Gayle should come into the XI for the home fixture against Wolves at St James’ Park.
There has been a serious problem in attack so far this campaign for Steve Bruce’s side and that’s why they sit in the relegation places of the Premier League table as it stands.
Andy Carroll will miss the weekend’s fixture through injury, which means that Gayle is the only option competing with summer signing Joelinton for a spot in attack.
Here are some Newcastle fans on Gayle:
I would put him in over Joelinton. We have nothing to lose

A was thinking two up top cause wolves always play two up top Gayle with the pace and Joelinton can be the target man

Let’s hope this is the year Gayle truly steps up to the @PremierLeague & scores goals. RE: Mitro, he was foolishly replaced at NUFC by Joselu then Slimani then Rondon who he scored the same PL goals as last season & by putting a good defence behind him, could thrive a la Serbia.

At this stage he’s still a better option than Joelinton, not prolific in the prem but knows where the net is and keeps defenders on their toes so yes I’d start him
