Newcastle fans want £30m man back on Tyneside, after touching takeover message
The departure of Ayoze Perez from Newcastle United to Leicester City in the summer of 2019 was a blow for Toon fans. The Spaniard, up until that point, had become the club’s best player. Perez sent a touching message to Newcastle fans on Thursday after a takeover – and fans want him back.
Perez, 28, spent five years on Tyneside after being brought to the club from Tenerife for less than £2million. He ended up playing 195 times for Newcastle, having a hand in 65 goals – scoring 48 and creating 17. In his last season, he scored 12 goals alongside Salomon Rondon in 37 league games.
He was a fan favourite when he left, and many understood his decision to go – joining Leicester for a fee of £30million (BBC). With the Foxes, he has struggled to replicate his best form – managing just 18 goal involvements in 81 games. Largely, Perez has been used out wide rather than in the middle.
Not only that, but Perez has only started 59 of those 81 games – completing 90 minutes just 13 times since his move to the King Power. Even this season, he has only been afforded two Premier League games – though he was suspended for three of Leicester’s seven outings in England’s top tier.
His old side, meanwhile, are set for a new era. Mike Ashley finally sold the club for £300million to a Saudi Arabia-backed consortium. Indeed, 80% of the takeover will be funded by the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund. Piracy issues, and concerns over human rights, have been resolved.
Alongside the PIF, Amanda Staveley’s PCP Capital Partners will own 10% – with Staveley expected to forefront the Newcastle board. The Reuben Brothers also have a 10% stake, with Jamie Reuben high up on Newcastle’s new-look board. It’s an exciting time to be a Toon fan.
Despite being a Leicester player, Perez has remembered his roots – having spent five years in the north east. He sent a touching message to the Toon fans, with whom he had such a good relationship with between 2014 and 2019. He stated he is happy for the club, fans and his old teammates.
What are Newcastle fans saying, in response to Perez and his Tweet?
Right now, Newcastle have a squad that should be performing better than 19th place in the Premier League. Players like Allan Saint-Maximin, Callum Wilson, Jamaal Lascelles and Martin Dubravka are certainly capable of playing for a club in the top half of the Premier League.
But there is a spot on the right flank at Newcastle that could be available – as could the 10 role. Wilson starts up top when fit, with Saint-Maximin from the left flank. Newcastle need a 10 and a right winger that are as good as their best two players – and Perez would give them that option.
Bought for £30million, Newcastle could certainly get Perez back from Newcastle for a much cheaper price. Responding to his Tweet, many Toon fans ordered their club to bring Perez back. For Perez at this moment in time, he might be tempted – given his lack of game time on Tyneside.
