Newcastle fans want 21-year-old to replace void of injured Isaac Hayden

Newcastle Untied have been left with a huge hole in their midfield following news of Isaac Hayden’s season-ending injury – and some of the club’s fans on Twitter are convinced that youngster Matty Longstaff should be his direct replacement in the starting XI.

Hayden, 26, has been an ever-present in the Magpies side, and such a key figure under manager Steve Bruce.

But Newcastle confirmed (official website) yesterday that the English central midfielder is going to be sidelined for the rest of the 2020/21 season with a “significant” knee problem.

With Hayden out of action, Bruce needs someone to step up in his place to help during their relegation fight.

The Toon are already without key figures such as Callum Wilson and Allan Saint-Maixmin through injury, so losing another main player is a big dent.

A selection of Newcastle supporters on social media want to see Longstaff drafted into the team as Hayden’s replacement.

The 21-year-old academy graduate has shown he can cut it at senior level, and he’s previously played 20 first-team games for the club.

But he’s been thrown down the pecking order lately at St James’ Park, and hasn’t played since January so it seems unlikely he’ll be Hayden’s replacement.

But Newcastle fans claim he’d be the best option:
