Ian Wright and Roy Keane had plenty to say about Marcus Rashford and Anthony Gordon ahead of England’s game against Latvia.

Gordon was given the nod yet again by England boss Thomas Tuchel to start on the left wing ahead of Rashford.

Newcastle United’s star man enjoyed a great evening in Latvia as he netted his very first goal for the senior England team in the first half.

But ahead of England’s 5-0 win in World Cup qualifying, Roy Keane and Ian Wright made a strong claim about Gordon’s place in the national team.

Roy Keane and Ian Wright back Marcus Rashford to start over Anthony Gordon

Keane and Wright have both backed Marcus Rashford to start over Anthony Gordon for England at the 2026 World Cup.

Rashford has impressed on loan at Barcelona so far, and TBR Football understands the Catalan club are already considering triggering their buy option.

The Manchester United loanee has been in great form over in Spain, so it might have come as a surprise to see Gordon start ahead of him again for the Three Lions.

When asked whether England’s best from three is Kane, Saka and Rashford, Wright told ITV: “I do think that, I think that being totally honest, Anthony Gordon is very fortunate to continue to be starting.

“I’m not saying he’s ripping it up at the moment, but I think that Rashford, the way he’s playing at the moment, it wouldn’t surprise me if he was starting.”

Meanwhile, Keane was asked whether Rashford is more complete than Gordon: “I think so, I think he’s got more about him.

“If you put yourself in the shoes of a full-back and you see Rashford running at you, with or without the ball, you’d be absolutely worried.”

Looking at both players’ stats this season, Rashford has three goals and five assists for Barcelona; meanwhile, Gordon has netted three times for Newcastle.

Newcastle fans back Anthony Gordon over Marcus Rashford

The pair’s claims left a lot of angry fans in Tyneside, with Newcastle supporters backing Gordon over Rashford.

Fans of the Magpies believe that the 24-year-old’s display against Latvia will silence some claims about Rashford starting over him.

Given Gordon’s form over the last two seasons, especially compared to Rashford’s, it’s no wonder he is getting more chances for England right now.

During the match, Newcastle fans took to X to share their frustration towards Keane and Wright’s claims about Gordon and Rashford.

One fan claimed: “Why are these pundits saying Gordon has to deliver because Rashford is on the bench? He’s been the brightest of the wingers so far.”

“The absolute slander on Gordon from Keane and Wright, who both say Rashford is a better player than Gordon, who’s been the best player on the pitch,” added another.

There was yet more praise for the Newcastle winger: “Gordon is miles better than Rashford.”

Finally, another fan claimed: “Gordon and Anderson have grabbed their chances, making it difficult for Bellingham, Foden and Rashford to get back in.”
