Newcastle United are reportedly interested in Atlanta United forward Josef Martinez – and some of the club’s supporters on Twitter are extremely excited about the speculation.
The Chronicle explains that Newcastle are currently eyeing the 26-year-old attacker from the MLS division.
It is understood that he’s on a shortlist for possible Magpies targets in January.
Martinez is a centre-forward that has scored 31 goals in 34 games across all competitions this season and is on a 15-game goalscoring streak in the league.
The Venezuela international is one of the most feared strikers in the MLS and he previously played alongside Miguel Almiron, who was at Atlanta United before his exit to St James’ Park at the beginning of 2019.
A selection of Newcastle supporters on social media are convinced that Martinez is a great target for the January window and some are hopeful that he joins them.
Steve Bruce’s team do have Joelinton as the main option in attack, but it’s clear that there is a lack of a serious goal threat for them and that is their biggest obstacle to overcome in their relegation fight.
The Magpies paid £20million (BBC) to sign rapid winger Almiron from Atlanta United and he’s looked exciting at times, but failed to score a competitive goal since his January arrival and is finding it difficult in the Premier League.
