Sean Longstaff was recalled to the Newcastle United team for the FA Cup third round tie away to Rochdale on Saturday – and some of the club’s fans on Twitter voiced their frustration at the quality of his display.
Steve Bruce’s team were held to a 1-1 draw by their League One opponents in the cup, meaning they will have to face them again at home in a replay.
Miguel Almiron’s first-half goal was cancelled out by Aaron Wilbraham in the second period and it was an overall underwhelming performance from the Premier League side.
The Magpies had lost four of their last five league games going in to the cup tie and even a fairly strong XI on paper was unable to chalk up a much-needed win.

A selection of Newcastle supporters on social media were left angry with the display of Longstaff in the centre of the park.
The 22-year-old lacked a real presence in the midfield and his younger brother Matty looked far more switched on.
Longstaff hasn’t looked like the same player this season that burst into the first-team during the last campaign
He’s been in and out of the side under Bruce this campaign after failing to make much of an impact, which leaves him with a big point to prove.
The central midfielder was extremely highly-rated last season and was looking a force in the team, but his progress has been stalled ever since a knee injury in March that saw him ruled out until the summer.
