Newcastle United are through to the Carabao Cup semi-finals after running out 3-1 winners over Brentford in Wednesday’s quarter-final at St James’ Park.

Sandro Tonali helped the Magpies on their way with a brace, getting his first in the ninth minute and his second just before the break.

Fabian Schar then put Newcastle out of reach in the 69th minute, with Yoann Wissa netting a consolation in injury time.

While Magpies fans were happy with most of the events on the night, there was one controversial moment involving Joelinton they felt shouldn’t have gone unpunished.

Newcastle fans aggrieved Nathan Collins was not punished after Joelinton incident

In the first half, Brentford’s Nathan Collins caught Joelinton in the face with his elbow and then stood on his face while jumping for the ball.

Newcastle fans were stunned that the incident involving Collins Joelinton didn’t even warrant a booking, something which would not have been the case with VAR.

One supporter wrote: “VAR in play and Collins sees red, unintentional or not he’s literally jumped on Joelinton’s head.”

Another one said: “Collins elbowed Joelinton in the face, then lands on him. We get no free kick and the commentators says it was the landing.

“Are they watching the same game we are? Total anti-Toon bias again!!”

Newcastle fans were also impressed by how Joelinton acted in the aftermath of the incident, confronting Collins and not flinching when getting patched up.

One fan wrote: “Joelinton casually getting his face stapled up on the pitch, without so much as a flinch.”

Another said: “Joelinton has solidified himself hard ******* status btw, elbowed + face stamped on and got up wanting to fight!”

And one wrote: “Never been as moved in my life as when Joelinton went to set about Nathan Collins after getting his face stood on, hardest man in the Toon I fear.”

Joelinton ended up being substituted at half time.

How the media rated Joelinton display v Brentford

Chronicle Live gave Joelinton a 7 out of 10 rating and wrote: “Battled on until half-time after Nathan Collins elbowed him then stamped on him.

“Would have been a red card with VAR so no wonder he was furious.”

Meanwhile, the Shields Gazette went with a rating of 6 out of 10 for his efforts on the night.

They wrote: “Battled on after receiving a nasty cut down his ear after being elbowed and jumped on by Nathan Collins.”
