Newcastle United were beaten 3-0 by Leicester City at St James’ Park on Wednesday – and some of the club’s fans on Twitter were angry with the performance of defender Florian Lejeune.
Steve Bruce’s team were outplayed by second-placed Leicester in the Premier League fixture and it didn’t help that they suffered a string of injuries.
Ayoze Perez and James Maddison fired the visitors into a two-goal advantage at half-time, while Hamza Choudhury added a third in the 87th minute.
The Magpies travel to League One Rochdale at the weekend in the FA Cup third round, before an away clash against Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League.
A selection of Newcastle supporters on social media singled out Lejeune for major criticism after his display on New Year’s Day.
The 28-year-old centre-back gifted Leicester possession in the build up two their two first-half goals and was a real weak link in the defence.
But the Frenchman has played four games in succession since his return from a long-term injury on 21 December and it’s been a tough comeback.
With injuries piling up for Newcastle right now, it’s a real test of the strength of Bruce’s squad.
Here are some Newcastle fans on Lejeune:
You might dislike Steve Bruce but you cannot blame him for Lejeune not being able to pass a ball. Maybe the injuries have just caught up with him #NUFC

I’m a massive Lejeune fan and couldn’t wait to get him back but I have to say he’s been absolutely dreadful since he returned! Rushed back maybe? Doesn’t look the same player! Very worrying! #NUFC

Lejeune is to blame for this game #nufc

Lejeune is still going with the Christmas presents. Won’t win any games when your defenders are passing the ball straight to the opponent forwards. These are childish mistakes.
