Allan Saint-Maximin gave Newcastle United fans a huge sigh of relief as he slammed an effort into the top corner to beat Oxford United, prompting praise from Jetro Willems on Twitter – and Toon fans responded to the latter’s post.

With the scoreline at 2-2 and only a matter of minutes left at the Kassam Stadium before a penalty shootout, Saint-Maximing received the ball form substitute Christian Atsu on the left flank. A matter of seconds later, and the ball was in the net.

The summer signing cut inside, past two Oxford playes before unleashing a rocket of a shot that was destined for the top corner from the moment it left his boot. Newcastle now take on West Brom in the fifth round of the FA Cup.

Saint-Maximin posted on Twitter after scoring his sensational effort – just his second for Newcastle after opening his account against Sheffield United – and Willems responded to his post, claiming he would take him for dinner if he did it again.

Willems, 25, is currently on the sidelines after suffering a knee injury in the 1-0 win over Chelsea in January. It has ruled the season-long loanee out for the rest of the season, leaving the Netherlands international’s future up in the air.

German newspaper Bild have claimed that Willems has a permanent clause in his Newcastle loan worth £10million, and it remains to be seen if that clause will be activated. Toon fans have responded to his Tweet, urging the player to get a deal done.
