Newcastle United are reportedly rivalling Burnley to sign Sheffield United defender Chris Basham this summer after the experienced ace entered the final 12 months of his contract – and Toon fans have responded on Twitter.

Basham, 31, has been a crucial part of Sheffield United’s side this season – as the Blades continue to defy pre-season odds to remain in the hunt for European football. A loss to Leicester on Thursday, though, may end those hopes.

The former Blackpool defender has played every single Premier League match for Chris Wilder’s side this season, being somewhat of an understated – but pivotal – cog in Wilder’s excellent and well-oiled machine.

The Daily Mail claim Newcastle and Burnley are on red alert, though, having been brought to the attention of Basham’s contract situation. His deal is due to expire next June and that may allow clubs to nab him on the cheap.

Newcastle have plenty of options at centre-back, but Ciaran Clark and Florian Lejeune’s future at the club is somewhat in doubt given their numerous injury issues over the course of the 2019-20 campaign.

The Chronicle recently claimed that Basham – a boyhood Sunderland fan – was released by Newcastle as a teenager.

Newcastle supporters have responded on Twitter to the reported news that their club are keen on luring Basham to St. James’ Park this summer – and many are against the idea of luring Basham north.
