Peterborough United’s director of football Barry Fry has told the Mail – as per the Sun – that Celtic and Rangers want to raid the Posh and sign top scorer Ivan Toney – which has prompted reaction from Newcastle United fans.

Toney, 24, has been in stunning form for Peterborough United over the past two season – netting an enormous 26 goals in 39 appearances this season, as well as creating seven more. Last season, Toney scored 23 times for the Posh.

The striker only ever managed four appearances at senior level for Newcastle, before Rafa Benitez decided to offload him to Peterborough in the summer of 2018 for just £500,000 (Peterborough Today).

Just two seasons later, and Peterborough could increase their investment 30 times over. That is because Fry has claimed agents have informed him that both Celtic and Rangers are keen, and that he would cost £15million.

“I’ve had agents on telling me that Rangers and Celtic are very interested,” Fry told the Mail, as per The Sun. “But I haven’t had any calls from either Rangers or Celtic, personally.“If they have any sense, they’ll pay us £15million.”

Toney would certainly be a top, top signing given his proven form at League One level, but whether Celtic and Rangers are willing to splash club-record figures on a player that is unproven at the top level, remains to be seen.

Newcastle supporters reacted to the reported news that Rangers and Celtic want to sign Toney and many are frustrated with Benitez’s decision to sell him – while others think he would thrive in Scotland.
