Newcastle fans reckon four-year deal for Javi Manquillo is bad news

Newcastle United have announced that they have agreed a four-year deal with right-back Javi Manquillo just days before the Spaniard’s contract was due to expire – but Toon supporters are concerned.

Manquillo, 26, a signing during Rafa Benitez’s era following the club’s return to the Premier League in 2017, has been in and out of the Toon side over the past three seasons. Of late, though, he has been first choice.

Overtaking DeAndre Yedlin and Emil Krafth, Manquillo has started Newcastle’s last four Premier League games – taking his tally to 61 outings for Newcastle in all competitions. His contract was due to expire on June 30.

The former Liverpool loanee had interest from West Ham, Spanish clubs and even a potential move to Turkey was touted, but eventually the Spain Under-21 international has signed a contract until the summer of 2024.

A potential takeover continues to rumble on. A deposit has been paid and reports have claimed that a deal could be announced in days, rather than weeks. But nothing has been confirmed, and fans are becoming nervous.

Upon hearing that Manquillo had been offered a four-year deal, many supporters are concerned that the length of the contract suggests Newcastle are planning for the future without a takeover.
