Quite why it has taken so long to reach this point when United have been credited with an interest in the midfielder for months is a mystery.
But the Magpies have reportedly slapped the high asking price on the Englishman and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men are ready to walk away from the deal.
That said, many Newcastle fans do not trust Mike Ashley not to sell a player who is one of the few bright sparks remaining at the club these days, and for less than £50 million as well.
Such is the level of distrust among the fans towards Ashley, they fully expect Longstaff to leave this summer – with one citing when another local boy, Andy Carroll, was deemed not for sale before moving to Liverpool.
The consensus is that everything is for sale at Newcastle these days under Ashley and while he remains in charge, there’s every chance that Longstaff will be wearing red and not black and white when the new season kicks off.
Of course he is for sale, just Ashley's way of upping the profit margin! No doubt it will be spread over a scullion seasons with most in add-ons and clauses so the new manager will get 2m to spend on a replacement! The SDFC way!

£50m to open negotiations, Ashley will likely sell at £30m.

He's for sale. They'll take £30m without a doubt too. No new contract for Longstaff, he'll be pushed out unless Bruce works his magic…

which means Ashley will take £40m #AshleyOut
