Sam Allardyce was asked to rejoin Newcastle United last week but talks collapsed, according to a report by the Daily Mail.
The report says that Allardyce was identified as a potential replacement for Rafa Benitez because of his Premier League experience and the fact he was out of work and would not cost any compensation.
But Alladyce apparently turned down the offer because of concerns over the club’s recruitment policy and how much of a say he would actually have in it.
Allardyce was appointed manager at St James’ Park in 2007, but was sacked under a year later, over concerns about his playing style and signings.

Those concerns are only intensified now, with the club deep in the mire after the departure of Benitez. But even set against that backdrop, some supporters on Twitter feel this is a new low.
It goes without saying these days that the club is without ambition, and targeting an outdated, unpopular former manager, because he’s cheap and available makes that absolutely plain for the umpteenth time.
Perhaps the best that can be said is that there’s relief Allardyce turned it down, but the supporters are still not impressed in the slightest – and they’re absolutely right…
