Newcastle fans react to links with Everton’s Mason Holgate

A number of Newcastle United fans have taken to Twitter to comment on recent reports from The Sun which suggested that the Magpies are one of the teams interested in signing Mason Holgate in January.

Holgate has made 10 Premier League appearances this season for the Toffees. He has certainly benefitted from the lack of depth that the club boast in defence.

But it appears that he could be on the move in January. The Sun reports that Newcastle, Sheffield United and Bournemouth all want the 23-year-old, who did also play in holding midfield during Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Interestingly, it appears that Everton may be open to the idea of selling the former Barnsley man. The Sun suggests that the Toffees would be looking for around £14 million.

Based on Holgate’s display at the weekend, that asking price looks to be a potential bargain. But it seems fair to say that plenty of Newcastle fans have little interest in seeing a deal done.

The Magpies are arguably no stronger in any position than they are in defence. Meanwhile, they continue to struggle to score goals. Newcastle’s forwards boast just two league goals between them this season.

And the fans have implored the club to prioritise signing strikers in January rather than more defenders. They are not convinced that Holgate would be a significant upgrade on what they already have. So they are not sure that a January move would be a smart decision.

Here is how some of the supporters reacted to the links with Holgate…
