Newcastle fans react to Joelinton performance in cup win against Newport

Newcastle United needed penalties to eliminate League Two side Newport County from the Carabao Cup – and some of the club’s supporters on Twitter picked out Joelinton as a bright spark from the game.

Steve Bruce’s side were nowhere near their best against lower-league opposition Newport and it was the underdogs who went ahead in the fifth minute through Tristan Abrahams.

The Magpies eventually scored a late equaliser through Jonjo Shelvey in the 87th minute to send it to a penalty shootout, where the Premier League club were successful to reach the quarter-finals of the competition.

Newcastle can now look forward to a quarter-final at a later date, but a major cup upset looked on the cards for much of Wednesday night’s game and it took a piece of magic to send the match to penalties.

Shelvey produced some superb work to find room for himself in the penalty box and curled the ball into the far top corner.

A selection of Newcastle supporters on social media were left frustrated by the team’s overall display in midweek, but felt that substitute Joelinton had a positive impact.

Joelinton entered the action in the 62nd minute and he picked up the assist for Shelvey’s goal with a pass into his feet in a lively cameo display, albeit he did miss his spot-kick in the shootout.

Joelinton, 24, had a torrid first season at St James’ Park last year where he was unable to make a good impression, but the new campaign has stated a lot brighter for him.

The Brazilian attacker is not being relied on to play as the lone number nine striker, which has helped him make impacts in the Premier League coming off the left.

He slotted into a number 10 role against Newport behind the striker and it suits him to fill in a playmaker role.

Manager Bruce is slowly beginning to get something out of the South American and it will interesting to see if he starts at the weekend at home to Burnley in the league.
