It’s a cliche but Newcastle United needed a reaction when they hosted Manchester United yesterday, having lost 5-0 against Leicester last time out.
The game was always likely to be tight given both sides struggle to score goals and so it proved, with Matty Longstaff’s debut strike settling the game.
Engineering that level of defensive improvement in a short space of time is no mean feat and Jamaal Lascelles produced a captain’s performance to oversee exactly that and provide the foundations for the win.
When the team isn’t playing well, it falls on the captain to inspire changes with what he says and does on the training ground and also how he plays on the pitch – and the supporters felt he did exactly that yesterday.

They were full of praise for his performance on Twitter and praised him for a better display as he helped keep the likes of England international Marcus Rashford quiet.
It was yet another dire display from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side, but Lascelles and co could only beat what was in front of them and they did exactly that with a display which shows they’re still fighting.
