Newcastle United sent scouts to watch Gabriel Barbosa (Gabigol) in the Copa Libertadores final, according to The Chronicle.
Barbosa scored twice in the final of the South American competition for Flamengo. His two late goals were followed by a red card but he single-handedly overturned a 1-0 deficit to win 2-1 against River Plate.
The 23-year-old is now at the end of his loan spell at Flamengo, where he scored 31 times in just 38 appearances. This is a record that has caught the attention of Newcastle, who need some firepower up top.
Once again, Newcastle’s forwards failed to find the net in the 2-0 loss against Aston Villa. Joelinton has one goal this season while Allan Saint-Maximin, Miguel Almiron, Andy Carroll and Dwight Gayle are all on zero goals.
Barbosa is a proven finisher, although his time in Europe with Inter and Benfica was unsuccessful. But after scouting him, Newcastle could take a punt on the Brazil international. He might be the wildcard signing that gets them scoring goals.
Here are some tweets about the Newcastle and Barbosa transfer rumours.
