Real Sociedad midfielder Mikel Merino helped his side beat Real Madrid on Thursday – and some Newcastle United fans on Twitter were raving about their former player following his performance.
The left-footed playmaker previously played 25 games in total for the Magpies during his time at St James’ Park, which was an initial loan deal followed by a permanent switch from Borussia Dortmund.
But the Spaniard departed for Sociedad in 2018 and he’s really developed into a top player in La Liga since.
The ex-Newcastle star helped his current team knock Spanish giants Real Madrid out of the Copa Del Rey quarter-finals on Thursday with a surprise 4-3 victory at the Bernabeu.
Merino scored Sociedad’s decisive goal fourth goal on the night to make it 4-1 and it was enough to eliminated Madrid despite their late comeback.
The 23-year-old is an ever-present in his team as a central midfielder and his contribution against Madrid was his third goal of the season across all competitions.
He is an extremely talented individual with the ball at his feet with great vision and he’s really beginning to fulfil his potential.
