Newcastle United’s first game under Steve Bruce ended in a 1-0 defeat. Joelinton, Jetro Willems and Allan Saint-Maximin made their debuts but were unable to prevent an opening day loss.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s goal was the difference in a poor game. Saint-Maximin came off the bench in the second half and tried to make things happen but was unable to get past Bernd Leno.

Saint-Maximin arrived in the summer from Nice after impressing in Ligue 1. The 22-year-old showed that he can be a lively talent but he was often criticised in France for a lack of end product.

When he got on the ball, Saint-Maximin was intent on taking on defenders. He had one shot which forced Leno into a low save and that was as close as Newcastle came in the second period.

Saint-Maximin signed a six-year contract at Newcastle this summer and has shown early signs that he could be a good signing. He is still young, he has plenty of skill and he is quick. Alongside Miguel Almiron and Joelinton, Newcastle have an impressive front three on paper.

Here are some tweets from Magpies fans reacting to Saint-Maximin’s debut.
