A number of Newcastle United fans have taken to Twitter to comment on Jacob Murphy’s performance in their Carabao Cup tie with Newport County on Wednesday.
Steve Bruce’s men endured a frustrating night at Rodney Parade. A mistake from summer signing Mark Gillespie in the first-half led to the goal that looked set to book Newport’s place in the quarter-final.
However, Jonjo Shelvey equalised late on. The midfielder produced a moment of real quality in what was largely a very lacklustre Newcastle performance. And the Magpies went on to capitalise by winning the penalty shootout.
Newcastle may have managed to get through to the last eight. But, there was, understandably, a lot of frustration on social media following the game.
In fact, few players seemed to emerge from the game with any credit whatsoever. But Murphy was one who was praised by some.
Admittedly, the winger also came in for criticism. Whoscored.com shows that no player on the pitch attempted more shots than Murphy. However, he was extremely wasteful in front of goal.
But he has still received pass marks from some fans. He was arguably Newcastle’s best player. Much of the visitors’ good work went through him at various points throughout the evening.
Unsurprisingly, the fans were struggling to get carried away with any performance they saw. But if any Newcastle player was going to be awarded man of the match, it appears that Murphy would have been a potential contender.
Here is what some of the fans were saying about the wide-man during the game…
Nobody – apart from Murphy – has shown up tonight, but once again it’s appalling that Shelvey wasn’t the first choice to be subbed #nufc

Thus is shockingly poor football from #nufc. The only player I see that is almost decent out there is Murphy.

Murphy has been our best player by a mile

Jacob Murphy our best player

Murphy nearly scores there. He’s had moments of greed, but overall solid outing for him

Joelinton has looked more likely to do something in 20 minutes than most have all night and Wilson is getting into good positions (unlike Carroll, but there’s absolutely nothing to work with around them.
Murphy lively but final ball is letting him down. #NUFC

Only Lewis and Murphy coming out of this with any credit. Slow, plodding, lacking any sort of craft, creativity or know-how. Terrible from Bruce but players absolutely have to take plenty of blame as well. #NUFC

Murphy certainly been our best player. Energy throughout. #NUFC

After tonight Jacob Murphy deserves a chance in the PL. Only player that looked like having an impact #NUFC
