Newcastle fans react on Twitter to Dwight Gayle contract reports

A number of Newcastle United fans have taken to Twitter to react to reports from The Athletic claiming that Dwight Gayle has signed a new three-year contract with the Magpies.

It has been a bleak time for supporters to say the least. Steve Bruce’s men went into the international break off the back of a woeful run of form.

They are edging closer and closer to the bottom three. So you can understand why the decision to seemingly hand Gayle a new contract has gone down poorly amongst fans.

The 31-year-old has made two starts in the Premier League this term. And it perhaps says a lot about how highly Steve Bruce rates him that he decided to leave him on the bench for this month’s 3-0 defeat away at Brighton.

Nevertheless, Gayle looks set to stay for some time to come. According to The Athletic, he has agreed a new three-year deal on reduced terms.

The contrast between his form in the Premier League and the Championship has influenced how many have reflected upon the report.

‘Preparing for life in the Championship then’

Gayle – who currently earns £40,000-a-week, according to Spotrac – is yet to reach double figures in a single season in the top flight during his career. However, he has scored 46 times across his last two years in the second tier.

And several have suggested that keeping Gayle beyond this summer is a sign that Newcastle are now resigned to probably getting relegated.
