Newcastle fans react as Wayne Rooney reportedly throws hat into the ring

Newcastle United have reportedly added Derby County gaffer Wayne Rooney to their shortlist – and Toon fans have responded on Twitter.

Rooney, 35, is currently in his first managerial role at Championship side Derby – and enduring a pretty turbulent time of it, including a deduction.

Indeed, Derby sit bottom after 12 league games – in which they would have clocked up 15 points and sit in 14th. Only for a 12-point deduction.

He has won just 13 of his 50 games in charge but earning plenty of praise – apart from the odd hiccup here and there. But now, he could depart.

Sport Bible, and The Chronicle, report that he is on Newcastle’s shortlist and is keen to take over. He would add Shay Given to his Toon coaching staff.

Of course, Rooney is incredibly inexperienced compared to others on the shortlist – which also includes Steven Gerrard and Roberto Martinez.

What are Newcastle fans saying about Derby gaffer Rooney?

Of course, Steve Bruce is expected to be given his marching orders this week. A move that was said to be likely last week on Tyneside.

But would they really go for Rooney? The calibre of Manchester United’s leading goalscorer will certainly attract players from all around.

However, he lacks any kind of relevant experience. The Premier League is a different animal. There is an argument to be had for staying at Derby.

Perhaps the Toon job has come to early. Some Newcastle fans are in agreement, hopeful that Rooney is overlooked for the managerial post.
