Newcastle fans react as Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho comments on takeover

Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho has commented on Newcastle United’s potential takeover ahead of Wednesday night’s clash between the two sides – and Toon fans have responded on Twitter.

The Toon have been linked with a Saudi-backed takeover since April, after it emerged that Mike Ashley had accepted a £300million deal from Amanda Staveley’s PCP Capital Partners – financially backed by the Saudi Arabia PIF.

Numerous obstacles and issues have since emerged, including a damning report from the World Trade Organisation over piracy issues and the illegal streaming of BeIN Sports. The Premier League are yet to approve a deal.

Asked about a takeover in his pre-Newcastle press conference on Tuesday afternoon, Mourinho commented on Newcastle as a club, his work under Sir Bobby Robson, Steve Bruce’s work as manager and a takeover.

“Hopefully, the takeover helps them to become an even bigger and better club. I think everyone knows through my emotional connection with Sir Bobby Robson that Newcastle was always part of my life,” Mourinho said.

“I learnt with him what society is historically in Newcastle and around the Newcastle area so apart from my awful record at St James’ Park, it’s a club that I have lots of respect for.

“I’m happy that Steve is doing so well. The new owners will go there and spend lots of money and give him even better conditions because I truly believe Financial Fair Play is gone.”

Indeed, Mourinho has never won on Tyneside despite two spells as boss of Chelsea and his more recent Manchester United tenure. Now, he will finally look to rid himself of the Toon curse with Newcastle.

Newcastle fans reacted to Mourinho’s comments on Twitter and many predicted that the Portuguese boss wants to manage their club – while some urged him to move north when a takeover is completed.
