Warren Barton has urged Newcastle United’s potential new owners to sign RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner amid reports that Liverpool could finally land the German striker before June 15 – and Toon fans have responded.
Werner, 24, has been in stunning form once again this season – netting an enormous 27 goals in 36 league and cup appearances, as well as laying on 12 assists. He has been heavily linked with a move to Liverpool of late.
The Germany international has a release clause of £52million in his contract, and Sky Sports have now claimed that the striker ‘is ready’ to join Liverpool in the coming months – if the Reds table the eight-figure offer before the clause expires on June 15.
But given Newcastle are closing in on becoming the wealthiest Premier League club – even ahead of Manchester City – former Toon defender Barton has urged his old side to rival Liverpool and go after Werner.
With Newcastle’s potentially new owners are likely to splash the cash in the coming months, with a striker likely to be at the top of the Toon’s agenda. ESPN claim the new-look board have made contact with the agents of Dries Mertens and Edinson Cavani.
Newcastle supporters reacted to Barton’s claim on Twitter that his old side should rival Liverpool and look to lure Werner to St. James’ Park in the coming weeks, and many agreed.
