Newcastle United’s under 23 team were thumped 5-0 by their Manchester United counterparts at St James’ Park last night.
Braces from Nishan Burkart and Mason Greenwood, topped off by a Tatith Chong goal earned the victory for the visiting United side, as the Magpies appeared to freeze in the first team’s stadium.
It can happen to young players, but it’s particularly disappointing as Newcastle had the chance to move top of division two with a victory.
That indicates that they’ve had a good season and that there are some good young players in the ranks, but United had players who have made first team debuts this season and that extra class seemed to tell.

The result created some debate on Twitter; between fans who were shocked and angered by the result, and those who feel that one bad match shouldn’t undermine the good work done by a squad who are always going to be prone to inconsistency.
We’ve put together some of the best responses – the most reasoned and the most kneejerk – but it doesn’t seem like there’s too much for the Magpies to worry about and if they can produce a couple more players like Sean Longstaff for the first team, then they’ll be laughing…
