Newcastle have been short on firepower since they returned to the Premier League under Rafa Benitez, largely because of the lack of investment in the squad.
So the Spanish manager had to get creative ahead of this season, bringing in recently relegated Salomon Rondon in on loan from West Brom, in return for Dwight Gayle going the other way.
The towering striker has provided a real presence up front and set the tone by working ever so hard in a team that hasn’t given him a great deal of service at times.
But he has impressed to the extent he has been named the club’s player of the season and underlined his quality against Liverpool on Saturday, when he led the line expertly and grabbed a stunning strike to make it 2-2.

And the supporters absolutely love him and have urged their club to land him on a permanent basis at the end of the season.
Benitez is doing a fine job with the resources he has and it it tantalizing to imagine how well he might do if backed in the transfer market by those above him.
