Newcastle United’s potential new board could look to bring in a marquee player this summer and a report has claimed Barcelona star Antoine Griezmann could be targeted – and Toon fans have responded with enormous excitement.

Amanda Staveley’s efforts to finally remove Mike Ashley as owner finally look to have come to a conclusion, with Staveley and her PCP Partners set to complete a takeover. Her group have been backed by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF).

Indeed, PIF are expected to have an 80% stake in Newcastle – with Ashley accepting a £300million offer. Staveley and PCP will get 10%, as will the Reuben Brothers – who are the second wealthiest country in the country.

With a new takeover being formulated, Newcastle fans are excited at the prospect of spending big under their new owners – and ending a 13-year spell under Ashley. Reports of players being linked with Newcastle were inevitably going to arrive.

The first big-name player has now been linked, with Italian outlet Sport Mediaset claiming Newcastle’s new owners could look to make an astonishing move to sign 29-year-old World Cup winner Antoine Griezmann.

Signed by La Liga leaders Barcelona for £107million, the former Atletico Madrid star would cost a huge amount of money. Despite the unlikelihood that the Frenchman will pull on a Toon jersey, Newcastle fans responded excitedly – and sarcastically.
