The Sun claimed earlier this month that AFC Bournemouth are interested in a move to sign Peterborough’s star striker Ivan Toney, who is rated at a whopping £13million – and Newcastle fans have reacted on Twitter to the reported news.
Toney, 23, was sold by Benitez in the summer of 2018 on a permanent basis to Peterborough. He came through the ranks at Northampton Town before being plucked by The Toon as a teenager in 2015, but he managed just four senior outings.
Instead, he went on loan six times before permanently leaving – twice to Scunthorpe United, twice to Barnsley, once at Wigan and once at Shrewsbury. Peteborough saw enough in Toney to bring him to London Road almost two years ago.
Since then, he has gone from strength to strength. Last season, Toney threw himself into the spotlight with 23 goals for Peterborough in 55 outings, and this season he is even better form – prompting interest from Bournemouth.
Indeed, Toney has netted a whopping 25 goals in just 38 outings. Reports claim that Bournemouth are keen for Toney to rival the likes of Dom Solanke, Josh King and Callum Wilson for a place in the Cherries side, ahead of a summer move.
Newcastle fans reacted to the reported news that the player sold by Benitez is now attracting Premier League interest for an eight-figure fee – and many are desperately hoping that their club included a certain clause.
A prudent Premier League club would have put a buy back clause into the deal. Just in case.

We could always get Toney back on the cheap as he has a sell on clause

Toney is a natural finisher you could see that a mile off, just wasnt given the chance under Rafa and wouldn't have fitted into Rafas style of play, if our chief executive had any footballing brain he would have put a sell on clause or buy back clause but he hasn't and didnt

Ivan Toney can’t stop scoring at the minute. Wish we had a buy back clause

We did put in a canny sell-on clause, so if we did happen to buy him back – which I can’t see us doing – it won’t cost us 13m.

Might do a job for them in the championship next season, might be time to ask questions then
