Luke Charman scored as Newcastle United’s U23 side earned bragging rights over bitter rivals Sunderland.
In the U23 clash, Newcastle edged Sunderland out with a 2-0 victory. Charman opened the scoring and Victor Fernandez notched the second goal as Sunderland ended with 10 men on the pitch.
Charman has never played for Newcastle’s senior team but he is an experienced youth team player. The 21-year-old, who has played more than 50 games for the U23s, hardly needed any time to put Newcastle ahead.

Just six minutes into the clash, Fernandez was fouled in the box and Newcastle were awarded a penalty. Charman stepped up one minute later and slammed his penalty down the middle of the goal to put the Magpies into the lead.
Then, on 24 minutes, Charman was in the thick of the action yet again. The former Accrington Stanley loanee made a run to go through on goal but Brandon Taylor handled the ball. The Sunderland youngster was handed a red card for this foul.
Newcastle fans reacted on Twitter after Charman expressed his delight at scoring and winning. Here are some of the best tweets.
