Newcastle fans react as Leeds reportedly join race to sign Matty Longstaff

Leeds United are reportedly interested in signing Newcastle United midfielder Matty Longstaff this summer, who is seemingly out of contract at St. James’ Park following the end of the season – and Toon fans have responded.

The 20-year-old midfielder has been offered numerous deals by Newcastle but is yet to accept any put in front of him. He has been strongly linked with Italian side Udinese, while Premier League sides are also becoming keen.

The Telegraph claim Leeds are now interested, with West Ham and Everton also being linked over the weekend. It remains to be seen if a compensation fee will be needed to sign Longstaff in the coming months.

It is of little surprise that the England Under-21 international is attracting suitors. Though he only managed 15 Premier League appearances throughout 2019-20, he scored twice against Manchester United.

Leeds do have options in the middle of the park, with Tyler Roberts partnering mainstay Mateusz Klich of late. Jamie Shackleton, Stuart Dallas, Pablo Hernandez and more have played there this season.

But none have managed to cement themselves in the team and Marcelo Bielsa could be looking at Longstaff as the long-term partner to Klich. Newcastle fans think a move to Leeds would be good for Yorkshire-born Longstaff.
