Newcastle United midfielder Jonjo Shelvey had admitted that he is playing for a new contract.
In the club’s official programme (via The Chronicle), Shelvey said that he wants to sign a new deal at Newcastle. He added that his family are settled in the area and he doesn’t want to leave.
Shelvey was the hero for Newcastle at the weekend. The 27-year-old scored a late equaliser, curling in from outside the box, to earn a dramatic point against reigning champions Manchester City.
“I want to stay here”
On his future, Shelvey told the official programme (via The Chronicle): “At the end of the day, I’m playing for a new contract now. I want to stay here, and hopefully a contract will be sorted. The kids love it up here – they’ve got their friends here.”
Newcastle fans have been discussing whether to give the central midfielder a new contract extension. Shelvey splits opinion down the middle due to his sporadic form and fitness concerns. But there is no doubting that he is an excellent player on his day.
Here are some tweets about Shelvey’s comments.
If he keeps playing the way he did yesterday I would give him a new deal

Can’t be underestimated what an impact he can have in a game. Even if he’s not always first choice, he’s a solid player to have available to us. Get him signed up!

No one is questioning the quality that shelvey has, but he cant play in a system with only 2 central midtfielders. He have to be protected by 2 others in the mid, so he can use his qualities, passing and vision. He is to slow to play alone alongside Hayden

Shouldn’t be having to play for a contract. Should be wanting to play well full stop
