Jonjo Shelvey has claimed that he almost left Newcastle United in the summer to join boyhood supported club West Ham United, but The Toon opted against a move – and Newcastle fans have reacted on Twitter.
The 27-year-old was very much out of favour last season under Rafa Benitez, with injuries and a lack of momentum preventing him from getting any real kind of consistent game time. He played 16 times out of Newcastle’s 38 legaue games.
It saw him linked with a move elsewhere in the summer and Shelvey has now revealed that a move to his boyhood club West Ham was on the cards, only for Newcastle reject the chance for the England international to leave the club.
Now, a regular under Steve Bruce so far, Shelveyis expected to be playing for a new deal rather than a move to West Ham after entering the final two years of his contract at St. James’ Park. He told the Guardian he almost joined West Ham.
“I was close to leaving but the club said ‘no’,” the midfielder said. “I’m happy here, I love living in this city. I’ve never once stated I wanted to leave.”
Shelvey is very much first choice alongside Sean Longstaff, but Bruce does also boast the likes of Matty Longstaff, Isaac Hayden and Ki Sung-yueng. Shelvey will be hoping he can make it 116 appearances for Newcastle on Saturday, when The Toon play Watford.
Newcastle fans have reacted on Twitter to his comments, with many not impressed.

i can understand not running as much in a more forward position but to not run and close down as a CM is a joke and the reason i would never pick a player like him in a two man midfield

He's just not the type of midfielder we need in our current position, a fantastic flair player on his day and could ping a ball off a crossbar on the moon, but his work ethic is often very dubious and doesn't have the engine/desire to track back, don't see a future for him tbh

Bit of a contradiction isn’t it. Nearly joined West Ham but club refused and he wants to say 🤷🏻♂️
