Newcastle United are reportedly set to announce a takeover in the coming days and Joey Barton could not resist in taking one last swipe at current owner Mike Ashley – and Toon fans have responded on Twitter.
Amanda Staveley’s bid to finally end Ashley’s 13-year tenure in charge at St. James’ Park seems as though it is likely to come to fruition, with the Sports Direct owner accepting a £300million fee that will be paid over the next few years in instalments.
Staveley’s PCP Capital Partners will boast a 10% stake, as will wealthy British family the Reuben Brothers. But the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund will takeover as the major shareholder, owning a whopping 80% of the club.
Barton, who is currently in charge of League One side Fleetwood Town, spoke briefly on Twitter of how he had some great times under the stewardship of Ashley – but admitted that the current owner stifled Newcastle’s ambition and progression.
Joining Newcastle in the summer of 2007, Barton spent four years on Tyneside before leaving in 2011 – clocking up 84 appearances in all competitions for the Toon. He also played for Manchester City, Marseille, Burnley, QPR and Rangers.
Newcastle supporters reacted to his Tweet, with many applauding the 37-year-old for his honesty when discussing Ashley’s tenure. Some suggested he should consider a return.
