Newcastle United warmed up for the return of the Premier League with a behind-closed-doors win over Championship side Middlesbrough on Tuesday afternoon – and Toon fans have responded after Joelinton scored an excellent winner.
The Toon return to action in less than a fortnight as they play host to the impressive Sheffield United at St. James’ Park on Sunday, June 21. They began preparations for a return with a clash against Jonathan Woodgate’s side.
Early goals from George Saville and Britt Assombalonga saw Boro took a somewhat surprising two-goal lead but Steve Bruce’s side came roaring back. Outcast Yoshinori Muto opened the scoring for Newcastle with an excellent solo effort.
A mistake from the Middlesbrough goalkeeper saw Miguel Almiron equalise with a close-range finish. But it was Brazilian striker Joelinton, who has struggled since his club-record move, that scored after a stunning turn and finish.
Controlling the ball from a throw-in with a stunning turn that completely bamboozled defender Daniel Ayala, Joelinton complete the comeback with a neat finish to win 3-2.
Newcastle supporters will be hoping that Joelinton continues such form when a return to competitive action finally comes along, and many are excited to see a refreshed Joelinton without the pressure of fans.
Many also leapt to his defence, as some suggested his first touch was a fluke.
