Newcastle United suffered a 2-0 defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Monday night as Timo Werner finally broke his Premier League goalscoring drought – and Toon fans have discussed the performance of Joe Willock.
Newcastle came into the match having won two of their last three Premier League games, picking up results against Everton and Southampton. However, they came up against a Chelsea side that are in good form.
New boss Thomas Tuchel has improved the Chelsea team that were faltering under the guidance of Frank Lampard. Olivier Giroud gave Chelsea the lead, after Werner’s cross was parried by Darlow into the path of the Frenchman.
It was 2-0 not long after. Summer signing Werner finally scored, after brilliant work from Mason Mount. The midfielder’s cross caused havoc, allowing the former RB Leipzig attacker to find the back of the net.
Willock, 21, made his second Newcastle appearance against Chelsea having scored on his debut against Southampton during last weekend’s 3-2 win. The loan signing from London side Arsenal was replaced after 79 minutes.
Many Toon fans were impressed by Willock despite the defeat, applauding him on Twitter. Some even suggested that he was Newcastle’s biggest attacking threat – even having a header well-saved by Kepa Arrizabalaga.
