Newcastle United failed to stop Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City in Sunday evening’s FA Cup quarter-final as the Sky Blues earned a comfortable 2-0 win at St. James’ Park – and Toon fans have reacted to Jamaal Lascelles’ display.

The Toon fans were hopeful of a Cup upset ahead of the last-eight encounter, with Steve Bruce’s tactics obvious – keep City at bay. He lined up with a five-man defence, and a somewhat isolated Andy Carroll.

Newcastle had kept City at bay until the latter stages of the first-half, when Fabian Schar’s lapse in concentration saw the Swiss defender push Gabriel Jesus. Kevin De Bruyne duly obliged from the penalty spot.

The Toon was much brighter in the second half, as Bruce tried to find an equaliser. It looked as though it had paid off, as substitute Dwight Gayle was gifted a glorious chance – only for the striker to blaze over from six yards out.

City made Gayle and Newcastle pay, as Raheem Sterling cut inside before curling an exquisite effort past Karl Darlow to secure a 2-0 win and a place in the semi-finals. Lascelles, 26, was clearly frustrated.

The Toon skipper put his body on the line numerous times, winning headers, making tackles and stopping shots. But the former Nottingham Forest star could do nothing about Manchester City’s goals.

Perhaps one of the only Toon players to come out of the match with pass marks, many praised the £40,000-a-week defender (Spotrac) on Twitter despite the loss. One described him and Danny Rose as the best of a bad bunch.
