Gareth Southgate has kept faith with Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford after naming his England squad to take on Ireland, Belgium and Iceland in the upcoming international break – and Newcastle United supporters have responded.
Pickford has come under enormous criticism after multiple mistakes over the course of the past 12 months – but he has remained England’s number-one goalkeeper. He was dropped by Carlo Ancelotti during the loss to Newcastle.
But he has been called-up to England’s side along with Nick Pope and Dean Henderson – the latter of whom was unable to stop Istanbul Basaksehir scoring twice on Wednesday night as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Manchester United future plunged into doubt.
Asked about the decision to include Everton stopper Pickford, Southgate responded by stating that he felt no-one had pushed him to start: “There is nobody playing well enough to push him,” as per his press conference on Twitter Live.
That has aggravated Newcastle fans. Karl Darlow has been used by Steve Bruce in Martin Dubravka’s absence, shining in the Toon’s seven Premier League games – helping the Toon pick up 11 points from their seven outings.
The ex-Nottingham Forest goalkeeper has been excellent for Newcastle and many believe he could be called up to England’s senior side. But he was overlooked, and Toon fans are fuming with Southgate over his comments about Pickford.
